Missing People

When someone disappears, communities often rally together to help search for the missing person. Volunteer search parties can play a crucial role in covering large areas quickly and providing support to families during an incredibly difficult time. If you are interested in helping, it is important to understand how to join a search effort safely and effectively.

This is a great way to become involved as an RLSH where the focus is definitely NOT on you. It's about the work being done - searching for the missing person.
The first step is to determine whether an official search is being organized. Most missing person searches are coordinated by local law enforcement, search-and-rescue teams, or community volunteer organizations. Information about volunteer opportunities is often shared through police department announcements, community bulletin boards, social media pages, or local news outlets. Rather than starting your own search, always join an organized effort so that volunteers can work in a coordinated and safe manner.
Once you find an organized search, follow the instructions provided by the organizers. Many searches have a central check-in location where volunteers sign in, receive instructions, and are assigned to a specific search area. Organizers may ask for basic information such as your name, phone number, and whether you have relevant experience such as hiking, first aid, or outdoor navigation. Even if you have no specialized skills, volunteers are often needed to help walk search grids, distribute flyers, or assist with logistics.
Preparation is also important. Volunteers should wear weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes or boots, and bring water, snacks, and a charged phone. In some searches, volunteers may be asked to carry flashlights, whistles, or maps. It is essential to follow the directions of the search leaders and avoid entering dangerous terrain or disturbing possible evidence.
There are several reasons why people choose to participate in missing person searches. First, large numbers of volunteers allow search teams to cover more ground quickly, which can be critical in the early stages of a disappearance. Second, community involvement shows support for the missing person’s family, reminding them they are not facing the situation alone. Finally, volunteering in a search effort can give people a meaningful way to help during a crisis.

By joining an organized search responsibly, volunteers can contribute to a coordinated effort that increases the chances of finding a missing person while keeping everyone involved as safe as possible.
If you are concerned about this taking up too much time, it's not everyday that someone goes missing. And, it's not everyday that a missing person warrants a search party. Getting your name on a volunteer call list with the police or fire department could literally save someone's life or help wrap up a case.
On an entire other note, if you are an RLSH, please take a moment to fill out this RLSH 2026 Demographics Survey. It's anonymous. Just looking to gather some general information to study. It will end up becoming an article after the end of the year.
