Basics of Logo Design

A superhero’s logo is often the most recognizable element of their identity. From chest emblems to symbols put onto gear, a well-designed logo must communicate power, personality, and clarity at a glance. Good superhero logo design balances simplicity, symbolism, and visual impact.

One of the most important things to do is keep the design simple and bold. Superhero logos appear in many contexts - costumes, comic panels, merchandise, and promotional - so they must be readable at any size. Clean shapes, strong silhouettes, and limited colors make a logo easier to recognize instantly. Designers should also ensure the symbol reflects the hero’s theme or abilities. For example, lightning shapes suggest speed, wings suggest flight, and shields or stars often represent protection or heroism. The best logos visually summarize who the character is.
Another key consideration is contrast and visibility. Logos should stand out clearly against the costume or background. High contrast between the symbol and the suit helps the emblem remain visible even in action scenes or shadowed environments.
However, there are several pitfalls designers should avoid. Overly complicated designs with too many lines or tiny details can become unreadable in comic panels or when scaled down. A logo should never require close inspection to understand. Similarly, avoid copying or heavily resembling existing superhero symbols. Because iconic emblems are so recognizable, similarities can make a character feel derivative instead of original. Designers should also avoid inconsistent shapes or unclear symbolism. If viewers cannot quickly interpret what the logo represents, the symbol loses its storytelling power.
Ultimately, the best superhero logos combine simplicity, symbolism, and strong visual identity. When done well, a logo becomes more than decoration - it becomes a symbol of the hero themselves.

Designing Your Logo
As an RLSH you will probably want to figure out some sort of logo. Not everyone has one, but a lot of people do.
What is your RLSH name?
What imagery does it provoke?
For some, it's simply a letter. Dusk Citizen uses a big "D" as his logo. Impact has two logos: one is an "I" with an impact design and the other is simply his name within a shield. If we look at comics, the Avengers use an "A", the X-Men use an "X" within a circle, and Superman uses an "S" within a shield.
Other designs are usually based on a simple, stylized graphic. A lightning bolt, a bird, an insect, a fist, etc. You have to consider how it will look upon your person, as I presume you'd put the logo somewhere on yourself, as well as in smaller form - like a sticker or a patch on your gear or something painted onto a bag.
If you are not a design person and you're having trouble wrapping your brain about different designs, consider fonts (as an example, unless you really want a letter).

As you can see, there are a lot of fonts and a lot of different versions of the letter "A". The same concept can be applied for graphic logos. There aren't 6 logos out there for an eagle - there are a lot of them.
The best way to really get an idea for a logo is to doodle designs with pencil and paper until you have a solid idea of what you want. After that, you can either ask for some help to create a finished logo (vectorized png is great for scaling up and down) or you can do it yourself.
If you are designing a team logo, you should have something simple but with at least 2 color variations for light and dark outfits. For example, the X-Men have their symbol in yellow, red, blue, and black options (primarily) for use with individual uniforms. BUT, the Fantastic Four have black or blue uniforms with white trim and white logos - no variations. I have never seen an RLSH team with matching uniforms.
Tips:
Keep it simple, stupid (KISS)
Limit the amount of colors
Allow yourself time to work on various ideas
Don't be afraid to ask for design help
Ask other RLSH for opinions

On an entire other note, if you are an RLSH, please take a moment to fill out this RLSH 2026 Demographics Survey. It's anonymous. Just looking to gather some general information to study. It will end up becoming an article after the end of the year.
