Getting Comfy In Uniform

Getting comfortable in your RLSH uniform is very important.  This is an issue for new RLSH and RLSH who don’t go out often enough.  If you are comfortable you’ll be able to move around better, you won’t be distracted by your own uniform, and you’ll have confidence that others may be lacking.

How do you gain this confidence and comfortability?

You wear the uniform and you make sure it’s comfortable.  Right?  Well there’s a little more to it.

Your uniform should allow you to: move freely, act as a protective barrier to some degree, not be too heavy/cumbersome, designed for the weather, allow for bathroom use easily, and be durable (made of quality materials).  This means that testing your uniform needs to hit these and any other goals.  Consider this as “uniform testing” which will lead to confidence and comfortability.  Jump, crawl, run, go through full ranges of motion.  If you have padding, test it out.  Know what your uniform allows for and is capable of.

To gain confidence and comfortability, you need to spend time in your uniform.  This means patrols, being out in the public eye, etc.  This really stalls a lot of people from crossing that line to becoming an RLSH.  The flip side to this is that no one has an issue with dressing up for a holiday or for a comicon.  If you want to be an RLSH, don’t be afraid to look the part.  If you have someone else in your area who is also an RLSH, it helps to patrol together, grab coffee together, and maybe even grab a meal together - while in uniform.

Another aspect for your uniform is going to be addressing seasonal issues.  Can you deal with the rain?  The snow?  The heat?  A cool autumn evening?  Whatever other season your area might have?

It does help to create uniform variants to address these issues.  My winter gear is aimed to function down to around -20F, any colder and I don’t want to go outside.  My summer gear is aimed to function up to the mid-90sF.  I have light armor, impact padding, and a bodycam that is pretty small.  I wear a drop-leg bag so it stays in place when I move.  I also have a few different variants so I can mix and match depending on the weather and situation.

If you are new to being an RLSH, the best advice I can give you is to get comfortable in your uniform - even if it's still “in the works”.  If you have a logo, put it on a t-shirt in your colors.  Start wearing your uniform colors until you have something solid put together.  Have a spot along your route where you can stop for coffee or water or something and become that weirdo regular.

I've posted this one before, but it shows Peacemaker breaking in his new uniform.

On an entire other note, if you are an RLSH, please take a moment to fill out this RLSH 2026 Demographics Survey. It's anonymous. Just looking to gather some general information to study. It will end up becoming an article after the end of the year.
