De-escalation training gives you some skills in defusing high tension or potentially threatening situations through communication and behavior modification techniques. When you go through this particular type of training, you learn how to notice red flags of possible aggression, different types of aggression, how to listen, how to communicate, how to keep your body language from increasing escalation, body language to notice,
The Issue - What is the problem? What is the threat they perceive? What is the underlying issue? How is the issue affecting the person that is aggressing?
Self-Regulation - How should you react to this situation? Self-regulate to stay calm and to help initiate a calmer environment for the aggressor. Also, knowing these techniques can help if you need to guide the aggressor through the same steps.
De-Escalation Fundamentals - Understand causes, normal reactions, and normal behaviors. Understand what turns conflict into escalated situations. Learn how to stay safe during de-escalation. HALO sequence and problem solving. Know some failsafes.

There are various classes online for under $100 that take around 90 minutes. If you are out on patrol, attempting to de-escalate a strenuous situation can be more effective than over-reacting. Also, it can help you gather more information on the situation at hand, giving you a heads up and being able to make the best choices.
Consider This!
If you wear a bodycam and follow your de-escalation training, then end up in a situation that spirals and you end up needing to contact the police, you'll have footage of everything. Make sure that you act appropriately, as it will reflect upon you, the attitude and perceptions of the authorities, and the RLSH community.
