I picked these up to test them out. One new part of going on patrol is having some sort of bodycam to monitor your own actions, the actions of others, and to possibly capture tertiary activity that might come in handy later (action in the background that later becomes relevant). Over the last few years the winter months have gradually increased in wind factor, so I was looking for a pair of smart glasses with a video/camera feature that had a sporty wrap design.
This is what I would consider to be “bare bones” smart glasses. These function as sunglasses and have a 4K video/camera capability. The video only runs for 30 minutes before it needs recharging. Also, I tested it out on a short drive home. The glasses arm with the battery heats up a little. Might not be a terrible thing in the middle of winter, but it did feel a little odd right along the side of my face.
The glasses themselves are a little narrow for my face, but I usually wear size large glasses.
Also, I live way up north where its dark all the time in the winter. I wanted something with a clear lens so my vision wouldn't be hindered. Additionally, in the summer the sun never goes away, so the transition lenses are a handy feature.
What I don't like is the auto-white balance, which you can see kick in when I tested the glasses while I drove. The weather was clearing up from a rainy fall day. The sky took over the bright with the auto-white balance, making everything darken and fall into shadow. It's not the worst, but it might gum up the works later.
Why Didn't I Get Another Brand?
Sporty smart glasses are kind of difficult to find. I wanted something to help quell the wind that also had video/camera capabilities. This just fit the mark and wasn't a ton of money. I figured that if these didn't work, then I wouldn't be out a ton of money. Another issue is that we have no local place to try any of these out. Sure, I'd love a pair of Solos or Ray-Ban smart glasses, both of which have way more features. I just wanted to see if I'd even be willing to use smart glasses.
The November "Notes From The Rooftops" will be about "a time you lent a hand" [as an RLSH]. Keep it to roughly 500 words. If you want to contribute (active or retired RLSH only), please send an email to Raven (raven@herocore.online). Currently, these are only coming out once a month. Deadline is the end of October.
On an entire other note, if you are an RLSH, please take a moment to fill out this RLSH 2025 Demographics Survey. It's anonymous. Just looking to gather some general information to study (data analysis is just something I like to do). It will end up becoming an article in the future (late-December or early-January).
NEW PROJECT. I'm starting a new RLSH Annual Comic Book Project. (tabs up top: Resources > Comic Book Project). This is a collection of short RLSH tales in an anthology type of graphic novel. Looking for artists, editors, and RLSH to share their stories. Deadline is Dec. 31.
If there is something you would like to see me discuss here on Herocore, please feel free to contact me.
